On Thursday, 6 August, Rafael Lucchesi, General Director of the National Service for Industrial Training (SENAI), together with Frederico Lamego, CEO WorldSkills São Paulo 2015, introduced the Competitors who will represent Brazil at the 43rd WorldSkills Competition, during a press conference held at Anhembi Park, where the event will take place.
“During WorldSkills São Paulo 2015, Brazil will be represented by 56 Competitors who have completed their training in SENAI and SENAC schools. We are more than pleased with everyone’s engagement. We are expecting 200,000 people during the Competition,” said Lucchesi.
“One of the purposes of the Competition is to encourage Competitors who have won state and national competitions in their countries and regions. This time, the Brazilian team has great chances of winning,” continued Lucchesi.
In order to participate in WorldSkills São Paulo 2015, the Brazilian team had over 311,000 hours of training, with 189 trainers, 64 types of training programmes, support from 70 international specialized professionals (from 13 countries) and 21 partner companies. The team is the largest team competing at WorldSkills São Paulo 2015.
Lucchesi highlighted that this Competition, in addition to being the largest in the history of the event, will be accessible to people from around the world through the Digital Platform. This platform enables viewers to follow the Competition in real time, over the Internet.
Former Brazilian Competitor, Natã Miccael Barbosa, 23 years old, who won a gold medal in WorldSkills London 2011 for Web Design, also participated in the press conference and talked about his experience and achievements.
“This experience [participating in a WorldSkills Competition] is quite important as it is a unique opportunity. Do the best you can because opportunities will appear. You are ready,” he said to the Brazilian Competitors.
Brazilian team leader, Marcelo Mendonça, said he is confident about the Competition. “Our team is ready, professionally and emotionally speaking, for the skill competitions.”
Economic setting
Rafael Lucchesi, General Director of SENAI, highlighted that since 2009, developed and developing countries have been promoting vocational education and system improvement actions.
“Countries and regions like India, Canada, the European Union and Asia are tuned into this matter. It is a global phenomenon dedicated to increasing labour market productivity,” he said
On the same point, Lucchesi also drew attention to the fact that the Brazilian educational system has to be discussed.
“We lag behind in this type of training and education. This increases the Brazilian educational system´s responsibility. We cannot afford to lose anyone else in this area and, therefore, we have to set up an important vocational education agenda in Brazil,” he added.
“Brazil needs to focus on vocational education, even in times of crisis. In the future, economic growth cycles will be greater and better if young students are able to receive proper vocational education,” he added.
Lucchesi believes that the greatest legacy of WorldSkills São Paulo 2015 could be a move toward discussing the importance of vocational education, involving youth and their families.
At the end of the event, journalists went on a tour around the Competition venue, which occupies a 212,000 m2 area at Anhembi Park, including the Samsung Pavilion, Sambadrome, and Palace. This is the first time in the history of Anhembi Park that an event will occupy all three areas simultaneously.
