UNESCO will launch a book on vocational education values in Brazil during the greatest vocational education and skills excellence Competition

24 July 2015

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Brazil will launch "Getting it right– Vocational and Technological Education Values" written by Jarbas Novelino Barato at the Partnership Hall of the 43rd WorldSkills Competition, the greatest vocational education and skills excellence Competition in the world, held from 12-15 August at Anhembi Park.

The book includes theoretical and practical subsidies intended to modify traditional perspectives on education, especially in regards to vocational education. The goal is to promote a broader vision about vocational education, where humans can reach their full potential, rather than simply considering education as a means to obtain knowledge.

To support the book´s content, the author monitored activities with students during workshops, considered work-learning places for the careers students chose; the author visited more than thirty schools that teach this specific skill; and studied documents on technical and vocational training courses in Brazil.

Getting it right promotes UNESCO´s vision of education, translated into its four pillars: learning to know, learning to do, learning to be, and learning to live together. Additionally, the guidelines in the book are also aligned with the Organization´s strategy for vocational education: developing skills that prepare young people to get dignified jobs, as well as prosper and participate in society.

"The main value is repositioning work as a human activity which besides being a means for producing goods is also a form of production for existence. The special chapter on young people and skills in the Education for All Global Monitoring Report in 2012 (UNESCO, 2012, p. 23), already highlighted the need to “develop skills that prepare young professionals to get dignified Jobs, prosper and participate in society", besides developing basic abilities.

The book will be launched on 13 August at 16:00 at the Partnership Hall, a special area for meetings and connections between partners, sponsors, and other WorldSkills São Paulo 2015 guests and participants.
